Gold Layered is primarily an electrical process. First a piece of base metal, normally brass, is submerged in a plating solution and then an electric current is passed through both the solution and the item being plated. There are many different solutions depending on the amount and color of gold to be plated. This process moves individual atoms of gold out of the solution and onto the item being plated. The gold plate is thus evenly deposited only a few molecules thick over the entire object. Depending on various factors, this coating can be worn away in a very short time or last quite a while. Please do not consider plating as a hobby as the process is much more complicated than this simple description makes it seem and the solutions involved contain highly corrosive acids and deadly chemicals like hydrochloric acid and cyanide. Gold Filled is a abbreviated g.f. = Lower in gold content than 10 KT, usually 1/20 or 1/12 KT. In this technique a sheet of gold is mechanically applied to the surface. Victorian pieces are likely to be unmarked, but later pieces are marked with the fineness of the gold layer, and the part by weight of the gold. For example any piece marked "1/10 12K G.F." is composed of at least 1/10 12K gold based on the weight of the finished piece. In the U.S. gold - filled pieces must be at least 1/20 by weight to be classified as gold-filled.

Gold is a pure element that is usually mixed or alloyed with other metals to make the gold used in jewelry. Pure gold is 24 karats whereas common gold in US jewelry is usually between 12 karats and 18 karats. These gold alloys consist of metals that are melted together in a homogenous alloy that is the same throughout the material. So, for example, 14 karat gold is 14/24 = 58.3% pure gold.

Gold filled, by contrast, is a layered metal constructed from a brass core with a layer of karat gold bonded to the surface with heat and pressure. The surface gold may vary in karatage but it must be 5% of the total metal by weight. For example, 14 kt gold-filled would be hallmarked 14/20 GF to denote 14 karat gold that is 1/20 (or 5%) by weight in the gold-filled (GF). The pure gold content is significantly less than a solid gold alloy. However, gold-filled is a quality, affordable alternative to solid gold as long as it is honestly represented. Gold-filled has significantly more gold content than gold plate which is a small fraction of a percent by weight.

What is GOS jewelry?

GOS is Gold over Silver. Gold-plated sterling silver jewellery is the best and most valuable in the gold-plated jewellery category. Designer jewellery and fine jewellery are mainly made from gold over sterling silver. The quality of the gold matters as does the silver. The reason we plate Gold over Silver is due to pure gold being too soft for jewellery and is alloyed with a base metal (silver) for strength.
