∙ 9y agoThe word grade comes from the Latin word gradus which means a step. It can be used to describe levels in a school system, which are like steps in a staircase: the first grade is the first step, the second grade is the second and so on.
It can also mean levels of quality. Levels of quality can be rated like steps, with the highest grade being the best and the lowest being the worst. This is what happens when we talk of grades of motor oil, or a grade being given to a student's assignment.
