Graphics RAM is memory on the graphics card that hold information on the textures that are to be rendered in a game, along with other things. Generally 512mb of RAM is more than you will ever need. The only time you would need more is playing at the highest resolutions on screens over 24".

Does ram from graphic cards contribute to overall ram on computer?

RAM from graphic cards does not contribute to overall RAM on a computer. A graphic card that has RAM will only use that RAM for the use of the graphic card itself and no other parts of the computer. This means that the RAM that is on the graphic card is only used to store images that are being sent to the graphic card itself. The RAM on the graphic card allows the card to handle much more graphic intensive scenes, and puts a lot less stress on the graphic card, because instead of the graphic card having to process every bit of information for the scene that is sent to it. ( lets say your graphic card as 1GB of RAM on it ) The graphic card can store at least 1 GB of RAM in its memory to process later, allowing the card to finish processing the information that it was processing before the new information came in. Hope this helps.

How do you use ram as video memory i have 4gb and 32 bit vista and my nvidia control panel says i can have up to 1.2gb of video memory how do i utilise or dedicate that?

Video RAM is separate from the RAM in your motherboard. The graphics card is like a computer of its own. The graphics ram stores graphic elements and the processor is the speed that it can store it. If you are a gamer then the processor speed is more important because you want higher fps. If you are a graphic designer then you want more RAM because you will be able to store more detailed images. The RAM is also different. Most PC RAM is DDR3 and graphics cards are GDDR5.
