Despite its name, Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts is not widely known for its vineyards. It has a few small-scale farms and wineries, such as MV Mycological and Chicama Vineyard (historic), but no large commercial vineyards exist. The island's cool climate and soil make growing grapes on a large scale challenging.
Martha's Vineyard got its name from Bartholomew Gosnold, an English explorer who arrived in 1602. He named the island "Martha's Vineyard" in honor of his daughter, Martha, and because of the wild grapes he found growing there, referring to the area as a "vineyard." The name has since stuck, and the island is now known for its picturesque landscapes and vibrant communities.
