China. Gunpowder was invented during the 9th century, by an unknown inventor. During the 10th century, the Chinese began to use a weapon called the "fire lance," one of the earliest confirmed gunpowder weapons. Gun cotton is nitrocellulose. It is a "low speed" explosive. It got its name because it looks like unbleached cotton. Film companies (like Kodak) used nitrocellulose and a waxy substance called camphor to make film in the late 1800s.
Mostly saltpetre is used as gun powder for filling guns. During the industrial revolution , it was a very important import material for England. ********** The original gunpowder- Black Powder, is a mixture of charcoal, sulfur and saltpetre. The solvent used in liquid nail polish is quite flammable as well. So yeah, you could probably devise some sort of explosive out of nail polish, but I wouldn't recommend it - there are dozens of ways to make improvised explosives that are easier, cheaper and more effective.
