Best Answer

hemisection anywhere in spinal cord, and the result is a mixed sensory deficit.

you'll lose proprioception (two point discrimination) on the same side as the hemisection.

you'll lose pain and temperature sense on the side opposite of the hemisection.

depending on level in spinal cord, the effects will be different

I have recently had surgery for a cancerous tumor in my T12. T12 is the last of the thoracic spinal vertibrae, and sits on top of the L1, which is the first of the Lumbar vertibrae. These are located basically in the middle of your spine (looking from top to bottom) I was lucky that I fractured my T12 lifting an object at work. The fracture occured because the tumor had consumed the interior of the vertibrae, thereby making it weak enough to fracture. It was only through an MRI that this was discovered. X-rays show the outer vertibrae only, thereby not giving a diagnosis. Usually the patient will gradually loose feeling an movement in the spine, and will be restricted to a wheelchair etc.
