I would suppose the closest English translation would mean 'out of sorts'.

Hors d'oeuvres (outside of the works, or the shell) however, are pre-meal tid bits, appetizers. More often hot foods served as appetizers are called hors d'oeuvres, or the opening meal course, in a multi-course formal dinner. I have seen these called hors d'occures only once, and most likely erroneously.

An oeuf is an egg.
