How did homlessness begin?

Homelessness has complex roots, often stemming from a combination of economic, social, and political factors. Historically, events such as industrialization, economic downturns, and urbanization led to significant displacement, while systemic issues like poverty, lack of affordable housing, and inadequate mental health services exacerbated the problem. Additionally, societal attitudes toward poverty and social safety nets have influenced the prevalence of homelessness over time. As a result, it remains a multifaceted issue that continues to evolve.

What does it mean if you are Intentionally homeless?

When a Council receives a homeless application they need to assess if the person's actions claiming homlessness are intentional or unintentional. If the Council belives your actions intentionally lead to you being homeless they have no legal requirement to help house you. Where as if your classed as unintentionally homeless then you are entitled to receive there help with housing. To give you a quick example if you decided to leave an accommodation whether rented or owned for no specific reason and asked for help with housing this would be classed as housing. If you're evicted or your home is repossessed this could possibly be classed as unintentional. I can't emphasize how important it is to get your facts checked or this before logging an application as if the Council don't need to help you you're left with no accommodation.

What causes homlessness?

There are a variety of reasons why homelessness exists such as a lack of affordable housing , the loss of income/job , health reasons where the exorbitant cost of health-care has ruined finances , a job that does not pay a living wage , the high cost of renting/owning an apartment or home , an addiction that has brought someone to ruin (or an addiction acquired while homeless in the hopes of finding relief from an intolerable position of being homeless , a matter of choice , homelessness is perpetuated by the fact that to 'get back on your feet' and rent a home you have to make good on any previous bills owed (rent and utilities for example) , the lack of credit , extenuating circumstances and many other reasons too many to enumerate . Homelessness is usually not a matter of choice .
