Hydrochloric acid is HCl dissolved in water

When dissolved in water the Hydrogen (H) and the Chlorine (Cl) separate. The Hydrogen ion has a positive charge, as it has one fewer electron than it would have as a hydrogen atom, and the Chloride ion has a negative charge, it having one extra electron.

The H+ ion reacts with H2O (water molecules) to form [H3O]+ whereas the Cl- ion is quite happy to sit around on its own.

Interestingly, water molecules are polar, their O bit is slightly negative whilst their H bits are slightly positive. This means that the water molecules near the Chloride ions will tend to point their H atoms towards the Cl-.

Hope this helps,

What do hydrochloric acid and iron form?

Hydrochloric acid and iron react to form iron chloride and hydrogen gas. This is a single displacement reaction where the iron displaces the hydrogen ion in hydrochloric acid.

What two substances can react with hydrochloric acid to form salt?

Two substances that can react with hydrochloric acid to form salt are metal oxides and metal carbonates. When metal oxides react with hydrochloric acid, they form metal chloride and water. When metal carbonates react with hydrochloric acid, they form metal chloride, carbon dioxide, and water.

Can hydrochloric acid conduct electricity or not?

Yes, hydrochloric acid can conduct electricity when it is dissolved in water. In its pure form, hydrochloric acid is a non-conductor of electricity, but when it dissociates into ions in water, it becomes a conductor.

Can magnetite dissolve in hydrochloric acid?

Yes, magnetite can dissolve in hydrochloric acid. When placed in hydrochloric acid, the iron component of magnetite reacts with the acid to form iron chloride, which results in the dissolution of magnetite.

Which is a stronger acid Hydrochloric or acetic?

Hydrochloric acid is stronger than acetic acid. This is because hydrochloric acid fully dissociates in water to form more H+ ions, making it a stronger acid compared to acetic acid, which only partially dissociates.

What acid eats iron?

Hydrochloric acid does a superior job of 'eating' iron.

What acid is there in your stomach?

The main acid in the stomach to aid in digestion is hydrchloridic acid. Several enzymes are also released.

What makes hydrochloric acid red?

Perhaps some red dye? But hydrochloric acid turns blue litmus paper red.

Is hydrochloric a base or neutral?

Hydrochloric acid is actually an acid, not a base or neutral substance. It is a strong acid that dissociates in water to form hydronium ions and chloride ions.

What ions are in hydrochloric acid?

H+ and Cl-

Why is chlorine necessary for digestion?

We need chlorine to help form hydrochloric acid in our stomachs because chlorine is a part of the element of hydrochloric acid
