Best Answer

In computing, hypertext is a user interface paradigm for displaying documents which, according to an early definition (Nelson 1970), "branch or perform on request." The most frequently discussed form of hypertext document contains automated cross-references to other documents called hyperlinks. Selecting a hyperlink causes the computer to load and display the linked document.

A document can be static (prepared and stored in advance) or dynamically generated (in response to user input). Therefore, a well-constructed hypertext system can encompass, incorporate or supersede many other user interface paradigms like menus and command lines, and can be used to access both static collections of cross-referenced documents and interactive applications. The documents and applications can be local or can come from anywhere with the assistance of a computer network like the internet. The most famous implementation of hypertext is the World Wide Web.

A special type of database system, invented by Ted Nelson in the 1960s, in which objects (text, pictures, music, programs, and so on) can be creatively linked to each other. When you select an object, you can see all the other objects that are linked to it. You can move from one object to another even though they might have very different forms.

For example, while reading a document about Mozart, you might click on the phrase Violin Concerto in A Major, which could display the written score or perhaps even invoke a recording of the concerto. Clicking on the name Mozart might cause various illustrations of Mozart to appear on the screen. The icons that you select to view associated objects are called Hypertext links or buttons.

Another Answer

Hypertext conceives information as node and link networking, forming navigable paths that can be toured, revisited, and referenced to.

It is a non-linear way of presenting information in a sort of diagram. Instead of reading or learning about things in the order predefined by authors, editors or publishers, readers of hypertext may order information in any order they wish to learn it in, sometimes omitting.

Hypertext is documentation that is presented onscreen. It has a non linear structure and can be read in any order you like. The text is broken down into small topics and links are inserted in the text, i.e words, phrases or pictures are linked to other topics. Hypertext can also include multimedia, for example a video. Hypertext is a network of topics and links.
