Pope Paul III was pope from 1534-1549. This was the time of the Protestant Reformation. He is best remembered for calling the Council of Trent in 1545, which reformed the Church. A reform had been called for for a very long time but had been put off to the point that Some people left the Church and started the Protestant Reformation. There was a growing problem with corrupt men taking positions within the Church. People wanted this addressed. The Council of Trent eliminated most of these abuses and clarified practically every doctrine challenged by the Protestants. This is known as the "Counter-Reformation" and is sometimes referred to as the "Catholic Reformation." He approved the newly-founded Jesuit order. He also issued a proclamation that automatically excommunicated anyone who robbed the Native Americans or enslaved them, though it was later withdrawn after complaints by the leaders of some nations. It did much help the positions of those who fought slavery even after it was revoked.
