It is the connection of the terminal portion of the small intestine, the ileum, to the outer skin of the abdomen, where liquid stool can collect in a disposable plastic pouch. An ileostomy may be performed for a number of reeasons; for example, an individual with colon cancer may have a portion of the large intestine surgically removed. During healing, the small intestine is connected to the ileostomy pouch (either temporarily or permanently, as the situation demands).

Ileostomy surgery is usually required when part of the large intestine has been damaged and is unable to process waste correctly. Part of the small intestine is looped to the outside of the body allowing waste to be collected without passing through the large intestine.
