-Overall, cleaning is what Housekeeping means.

-

-More broadly though and in relation to our retail environment, Housekeeping is the process of making sure all standards are met based on the brand expectations.

-

-Standards here refer to a wide range of details, they vary from one brand to another depending on what the product is and so on.

-

-Basic cleaning activities such as sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, etc.

-Making sure all fixtures are clean and in perfect condition (painted, no scratches, nails hanging out and so on), no lights should be burnt.

-Checking that all product is in place and set to visual standard (no products are mixed together, all tags and prices are properly fixed and displayed, nothing is dirty and all is ready to sell, etc).

- Pre Opening

- During Business Hours

- After Closing

-Pre Opening usually happens up to 2 hours before for larger stores and 1 hour for smaller stores.

-The main activities that usually occur include receiving trucks from the warehouse with replenishment and new products, opening the cash tills and counting the money, depositing sales, and so on.

-The majority of the staff force at that time should be focused on nothing but the standards and brand directions as well.

-Larger stores usually have cleaning staff provided and it is their job to sweep, dust, mop, clean the windows of the whole store (or as much as possible depending on the size, as long as the store is covered and clean).

-Smaller stores usually have to have their staff roll up the sleeves and complete these cleaning tasks, even in larger stores, managers could put their staff to cleaning duties based on what tasks are on hand, it is very important for staff to cooperate and know how important this is.

During Business Hours:

-Normally, whatever the store type is, there are always periods of low traffic in stores where staff could find themselves with limited tasks. These are the best times to conduct minor housekeeping activities that need to be accomplished in order to keep the store presentable and easily 'shoppable' at all times.

-

-Major housekeeping is usually not allowed to be done during business hours due to customer safety and general brand image.

-

-Examples of housekeeping tasks that are usually assigned during business hours include (they vary depending on brand and store type):

-Folding and returning clothes to their proper locations, clearing fitting rooms.

-Cleaning up spills and throwing out garbage that is left by customers.

-Bringing out items in small quantities from the stock room in order to fill an area that emptied up due to sales.

-Replacing garbage bags that may be filled and in important areas of the store (as long as done quickly and as away from customers as possible)

After Closing

-When the doors of the store are closed, the managers and cashiers are off to do their paperwork, reports, cash handling, and so on. The rest of the staff (depending on the size of the store) are left to handle closing procedures that should be handed over to them by management.

-

-Housekeeping usually handled after closing would include (but not limited to depending on type of store, events happening and so on):

-Up keeping the basic standards of the stores such as filling empty shelves, making sure signage is clear and in place, minor dusting and cleaning of things that are visibly dirty, placing things back on the store floor if they were misplaced, and so on.

-

-The point of after closing housekeeping is to leave the store at basic standards so that the opening team comes in and does not have to worry about the small things.

- Hope This Helps - Anonmous
