When slicing the sponge layers in the layer cake, they must be sliced evenly. They must also be perfectly level, which means cutting off any parts where the cake has risen more than the other parts (such as the top centre of the sponge) in order to acheve a flat surface. Thin layers of sponge are generally more appealing than thick layers.

Also, a layer cake is typically around half sponge, half filling/frosting. This means that creating the filling and frosting should be given equal (if not more) attention than creating the sponge layers. Try to use good quality products for the filling/frosting, because they will be quite noticable.
