There is a whole variety of test driving jobs with different qualifications necessary. Most test drivers are engineers trained with a driving safety training. After this with specialized trainings (performance trainings etc.) you can further improve your qualifications.

Basic tests can be performed by people with only a drivers license and a safety training but those tests are very repetitive and get boring quickly.

For international test drives on public roads it is quite common to pair an engineer and a mechanic as a team of which both are qualified to drive a test vehicle but the engineer is mostly responsible for the test execution.

If you want to become a test driver (and do the interesting stuff) I suggest you study electronics or computer science with a bachelor degree and then apply at an engineering company as a test driver. Of course a drivers license is required and bringing at least one driving safety training to the job is an advantage in the application process.
