The Players Handbook (1, 2, and 3) contains all of the rules to play the game from the player's perspective. It contains races privy to the PHB you get, and classes likewise. Also, it has a number of Magic items that you can equip characters with.

The Dungeon Masters guide (1 & 2) contains all the rules to play the game from the DM's perspective. It contains tables, ideas, and various guidelines for doing whatever you need. It also has some magical items to equip your players with.
