Maria, the young ward of Sir Peter Teazle, Maria and Charles Surface are in love, but Charles older brother Joseph wishes to marry her because of the fortune she stands to inherit upon Sir Peters death. Maria is one of the only characters in the play with morals and steadfast integrity, she refuses to gossip. in Act 1 she enters Lady Sneerwell's room to get away from the malicious scandal monger Sir Benjamin Backbite and when asked what he did to make her flee from him by the gossips she responds: "oh, he has done nothing - but 'tis what he said his conversation is perpetual Libel (a type of slander, most used in written form) on all his acquaintances" She is good natured and a stark contrast to the characters around her. She berates the characters for being so callous and cannot comprehend why they act in such a way, this is shown in a conversation between her and Joseph Surface also in Act 1: "They (the gossips) appear more ill natured than they are, they have no malice at heart." Maria replies: " Then they are more contemptible for, in my opinion, nothing could excuse the intemperance of their tongues but an unnatural and uncontrollable bitterness of mind" Lady Sneerwell is the young widow of a knight, she is a prolific gossip, she and her manservant Snake, spread rumours about others for their own gain or their own entertainment. Snake to Sneerwell Act 1 scene 1: "Mrs Clackit lacks that delicacy of tint- of mellowness of Sneer - which distinguishes your ladyship's scandal" She sees her ability to spread scandal as a skill to take pride in. She feels that spreading rumours is like a therapy for her and a sort of revenge for how she was treated when she was younger. "I wounded myself in the early part of my life on the envenomed tongue of slander....nothing gives me pleasure than reducing others to that of my own injured reputation. Like most characters in the play Lady Sneerwell lives off of inherited money. She is Sheridans warning, to beware of the pitfalls of idleness. "The devil makes work for idle hands" has never been so true as with her, she nothing to do with her time so she devotes most of it to leisure activities, the first time we see her she is brushing her hair in her room. The only good thing she does in the play is she makes Lady Teazle reform her ways. Lady Teazle was a country girl sucked in by the glamour of London life, she over spends and is enthralled with everything London society has to offer good and bad. Being manipulated by Lady Sneerwell and snake, makes her rethink her actions and re evaluate her morals in the last scene in the play she said this to Lady Sneerwell: "Hold Lady Sneerwell before you go, let me thank you and that gentleman for all the trouble you have taken in writing letters from me to Charles and answering them yourself, and let me also make respects to that scandalous college of which you are president, and inform them that Lady Teazle licentiate begs leave to return the diploma they gave her, as she leaves of practice and kills character no more." hope this helps, I'm doing this and Volpone for A-level and it's KILLING me.
