Inventory optimization - a little like the Holy Grail of stock management.

To run a perfect inventory system is impossible due to the range of factors that impact on the stages of the supply chain. Inventory Optimization is basically taking all the factor known, such as acquiring and storage of raw materials, shelf life of those materiel's, manufacture, meeting customers volume demands, meeting customer demands for additional volumes, handling postponement of orders, cost of storage at each stage of the process of supply. There are many software houses that consider their product does that job perfectly.

What is the definition of 'optimization'?

By Merriam-Webster dictionary, to optimize is to make as perfect, effective, or functional as possible. In engineering, optimization is a collection of methods and techniques to design and make use of engineering systems as perfectly as possible with respect to specific parameters. In industrial engineering, one typical optimization problem is in inventory control. For this problem, we want to reduce the costs associated with item stocking and handling in a warehouse. In the simplest form of this problem, the parameters to be optimized are the quantity of inventory required to fill existing and anticipated orders, when that inventory has to be available and the physical capacity of the warehouse. Optimization requires the representation of the problem in a mathematical model where the decision variables are the parameters of the problem.

What the are seven strategies employed by firms to reduce inventory in the supply chain?

Firms use several strategies to reduce inventory in the supply chain, including just-in-time (JIT) inventory management, which minimizes stock on hand by synchronizing production with demand. They may also implement demand forecasting to align inventory levels with anticipated sales. Another strategy is to enhance supplier relationships to ensure quicker replenishment times, while adopting lean manufacturing principles can streamline processes and reduce waste. Additionally, firms might utilize inventory optimization software to analyze and manage stock levels more effectively.

How do you calculate inventory turnover?

This is a very simple calculation. Days to Sell Inventory(or Days in Inventory) = Average Inventory / Annual Cost of Goods Sold /365 Average Inventory = (Beginning Inventory + Ending Inventory) / 2 To calculate this ratio for a quarter instead of a year use the following variation: Days to Sell Inventory (or Days in Inventory) = Average Inventory / "Quarterly" Cost of Goods Sold /"90" Average Inventory = (Beginning Inventory + Ending Inventory) / 2
