First close all applications or programs that may be open, such as email, any web sites, programs such as documents, spreadsheets, etc., then close your web browser. The web browser would be the program you use for reading emails, etc. You should now be at your desktop menu. Then you left click the 'start' option on your desktop menu, which will give you the option to put your computer in sleep mode, hibernate, restart, shut down, etc. Left click on 'shut down', then wait for it to completely shut down.
