King Charles I was beheaded in London on January 30, 1649. He was tried for treason in 1648. The first English civil war occurred over what type of government they would use. The court in which Charles was tried was headed by his enemy, Oliver Cromwell. After the beheading, Cromwell assumed control and restored the former government. But when Cromwell died, Charles' son took the kingdom back. Ironically (perhaps as retaliation, to settle the score), Cromwell was convicted of treason posthumously (after he died). They went so far as to dig up Cromwell's body and hang it from the gallows at Tyburn!
cromwell also called the lord protecter. took over after the persecution of king charles the first.
