Negative reinforcement is the term used to describe the removal of an unpleasant stimulus in response to a behavior in an effort to increase the liklihood that the behavior will be repeated. Example: a parent stops nagging when the teenager starts mowing the lawn.

Negative reinforcement.

Reinforcement is an aspect of behaviourism where an action or response is associated with an outcome, which affects the likelihood of that action/response being repeated. In positive reinforcement, a behaviour leads to or is at least associated with a positive outcome, meaning the individual is more likely to repeat that behaviour in the hope of (whether conscious or unconscious) repeating the positive outcome.

In negative reinforcement, the behaviour is associated with the avoidance of an aversive or negative outcome or event and so the behaviour is repeated in at attempt to further avoid such an event.
