Computers may crash for various reasons. One reason could be that a piece of hardware is not functioning correctly, or software is not responding. "Crashing" would be an entire break down of the system, while "becoming unstable" is less severe. Windows is the only OS I know of that crashes, but other Operating Systems' kernels just stay stable, even if a program stops responding.
