The Abstract Expressionist movement introduced the idea that the act of painting itself could be a form of expression, emphasizing spontaneity and the artist's emotional state over representational accuracy. This shift encouraged artists to explore new techniques and materials, leading to an emphasis on individualism and personal experience in art. Furthermore, it paved the way for subsequent movements like Minimalism and Conceptual Art, fundamentally altering perceptions of what art could be. The movement's focus on abstraction also influenced various fields beyond visual arts, including literature and performance.
As an artist, I cherish the ability to express my emotions and ideas creatively, transforming abstract thoughts into tangible forms. The process of creation allows for exploration and experimentation, which can lead to unexpected discoveries. Additionally, sharing my work with others fosters connection and dialogue, enriching both my experience and that of my audience. Ultimately, being an artist is a fulfilling journey of personal growth and communication.

The styles of the abstract expressionists varied widely. Each had their own unique methods, some were purely abstract while others included representation of objects. The main link of abstract expressionists was in their "action painting". The viewer could imagine the stages of development and figuratively see the hand of the artist (i.e. Pollock's drip paintings evoke the image of the artist physically dripping the paint. De Kooning's broad strokes evoke the image of an agitated artist quickly applying the paint)
