John did believe in God or a higher power. He was raised in the Church of England-Anglican/Episcopalian. John was anti-religion which is different than not believing in God. Religion is man-made. Yoko did at one time refer to Lennon as "Born again"= Jill Izzo

In his Beatle days John did believe in God but shortly after he left The Beatles he became an atheist saying in his song 'God' "I don't believe in Jesus." However, by the time he was shot Lennon was more agnostic than anything

John Lennon had a difficult childhood and adolescence; his parents split up when he was 2 - his father left home. His mother found it difficult to cope with the child - and also had another boyfriend; social services discovered that the child John was sharing a bed with his mother and her new partner and John was moved to live with his Aunt Mimi.

Mimi and her husband George were quite well off and John had a happy time as a child - he was close to his Uncle George, but he died when John was 13. Shortly afterwards, he found his mother was living nearby and re-established a relationship with her. When John was 16 his mother was killed in a road accident.

Understandably, John was deeply affected by these events.
