They were two thieves, who were put to death by crucifixion. Destiny did that they were companions of Jesus in those terrible last hours. Being already nailed on their crosses, one of them, known as DISMAS, repented of his misdeeds and asked Jesus to remember him. Jesus promised that that same day he would be with Him in Paradise. GESTAS, the other malefactor, did not accept Jesus and did not repent of his miserable life as evildoer. He only wanted to be saved of his sufferings on the cross.

After some hours of public torture the executioners finished the execution of the two brigands by breaking their legs with clubs blows. Since their bodies were not claimed, they were buried in a mass grave.

What did dismas do to go on the cross?

Dismas was a robber since he was a child. He assaulted people who traveled in the dangerous routes of the ancient Palestine. He had been imprisoned several times but released later because he had not killed anybody. But his mate of misdeeds, Gestas, stripped naked Sarah, who was the priestess of the Temple and the daughter of Caiaphas. This criminal and defiant act concerned indirectly also Dismas and finally Pilate decided to inflict an exemplary punishment to finish with the bandits that infested the territory: he imprisoned Dismas and put him to death by crucifixion. Gestas, was arrested at the same time and condemned to die in the same ignominious and cruel way. Nothing had been known about Dismas and Gestas if they had not been crucified with Jesus. Before doing their way to Calvary, they were also flagellated and carried with their crosses. On arriving there, the three were naked and nailed to their crosses. On being his wirsts and feet pierced with nails, Dismas cried and begged mercy. But on the cross Dismas repented of his misdeeds and implored Jesus to remember him. Dismas and Gestas finally died when the breaking of legs was applied to them after 5 hours of horrible sufferings.

Is dismas and Gestas mentioned in the king James Bible?

No those two names are not found in the King James Bible. Those names come from the Gospel of Nicodemus, which is an apocryphal book.

What were the names of the criminals crucified along with Christ?

In Christian tradition, Saint Dismas (sometimes spelled Dysmas or only Dimas, or even Dumas), also known as the Good Thief or the Penitent Thief, is the "good thief" described in the Gospel of Luke. This unnamed thief, crucified alongside Jesus, repents of his sins, and asks Jesus to remember him in his kingdom. The name Dismas for this thief dates back to the 12th century, and various traditions have assigned him other names. Gestas, also spelled Gesmas, is the apocryphal name (first appearing in the Gospel of Nicodemus) given to one of the two thieves who was crucified alongside Jesus. According to legend, Gestas taunted Jesus about not saving himself, while Dismas asked for mercy. Dismas was saved, and Gestas was not.

Did gestas get set free from the cross?

No, GESTAS was not set free from the cross. He died nailed on his cross and after horrible sufferings. Jesus' presence and the true repentance of his fellow Dismas did not move him to recognise his misdeeds. He insulted both and died hopeless. He thought that Jesus was going to do a miracle by removing his nails and save him from dying crucified.Like Dismas, he suffered the same temporal punishment of crucifixion, but he did not sanctify his penance. "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us as well" he said to Jesus.

How did Saint Dismas die?

Saint DISMAS died crucified in Jerusalem, not for being a christian believer but a malefactor. He shared his punishment with his mate Gestas, also a malefactor, and Jesus Christ. Previous to be crucified he was harshly flagellated. DISMAS was crucified like Jesus. Both feet and hands were fixed in the cross with nails. Once fixed upon the cross, DISMAS was lifted so that the people could enjoy with the sight of his torture. During the hours of crucifixion he repented of his miserable life and asked Jesus to be forgiven of his sins. Jesus promised him the Paradise. After several hours of suffering, two executioners made appearance, bringing with them ladders, spades, ropes, and large iron clubs for the purpose of breaking the legs of the criminals. They took up their iron clubs and broke Dismas' legs, both below the knees. They did the same with Gestas. A few minutes later, DISMAS gave a deep groan, and expired.

What book in the Bible contains the story about Dismas and Gestas who were crucified with Jesus?

The Bible does not contain that story. On the other hand, the apocyphal Gospel of Nicodemus names the two others crucified with Jesus as Dismas and Gestas. The fourth-century author looked to the Gospel of Luke and named Dismas as the one whom the Gospel of Luke describes as penitent. In Matthew, Mark and John, there is no penitent thief. The Gospel of Nicodemus is not actually in the Bible.Additional info:The only thing mentioned about the criminals killed next to Jesus, in the Bible, is found at Luke 23:32-33+39-43, Matthew 27:38, Mark 15:27, John 19:18

What did Gestas do wrong back in Jesus day?

According to tradition, Demas or Dismas was the name of the penitent thief hanging on the right, and Gestas of the impenitent on the left. They were both robbers, probably followers of Barabbas, who was released instead of Jesus, according to Roman custom. http://www.biblestudytools.com/dictionaries/eastons-bible-dictionary/thieves-the-two.html God bless, Scott
