Knurling is a machining process normally carried our on a centre lathe. The act of Knurling creates a raised criss cross pattern on a smooth round bar that could be used as a handle, or something that requires extra grip

Is it possible knurling on the rectangular plate?

I have seen it done on the show " How It's Made" where the work
piece was rolled across a plate which embossed the knurled pattern
onto the work piece. I am currently looking for a knurling plate to
use as an embossing or roller printing surface for jewelry making,
does anyone know where I can get one?

What is the value of an early Colt Woodsmen Sportmen short barrel serial 72xxx early knurling pattern?

Your question has probably not been answered because the serial
number 72xxx was made in about 1930 BUT the Sport Model Woodsman
with 4.5" barrel did not make its appearance on the market until
1933 around serial number 86000. So this needs some clarification
from you before an intelligent answer can be given.. It is quite
possible that the original 6.625" barrel was shortened or
re-barreled with a short barrel and the gun was not made as an
original Sport Model Woodsman. The phrase "early knurling pattern"
indicates that the gun has had the barrel replaced. If by knurling
you mean the checkered area on the backstrap, then for sure you
have a re-barreled gun because all Woodsman Sport Models were made
with horizontal, parallel lines on the upper backstrap so the gun
cannot possibly be an original Sport Model. Most important is the
need to supply a detailed description of the condition of the gun,
especially the amount of original factory blue finish. The value
range can be as much as $1,000. depending on the amount of ORIGINAL
factory blue finish remaining. If you want to Email some good clear
photos fothe gun and its stampings I may be able to give you an
accurate evaluation. But with the information given , no practical
figure can be arrived at. Please feel free to contact me. Don

What are the sides of a penny called?

The front of a penny (Lincoln's profile) or the front of any
coin is called the obverse or heads side, the back of
a coin is known as the reverse or tails side. There is
no jargon for the side or edge of a coin. Some coins have a ridge
around the edge. The process for producing that ridge is
''milling''. Also, the corrugated edge of a coin, such as the
quarter, is called a ''reeded edge''. The process for creating it
is called ''knurling'' or, sometimes, just ''milling''.

What are the operations carried out on lathe?

The main operations on a lathe are
-turning( reducing diameter)
-facing( reducing length)
-tapering( making a conical shape)
-knurling( making a diamond shaped pattern for easy grip)
-grooving( making a symmetrical indentation)
-parting( removing a section)
-eccentric turning( turning about a point other than axis)
-chamfering( creating a radially symmetrical chamfer)
others include boring, drilling etc.

Describe lathe machine?

A lathe (pronounced /ˈleɪð/) is a machine tool which
spins a block of material to perform various operations such as
cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation with tools
that are applied to the workpiece to create an object which has
symmetry about an axis of rotation.
A lathe machine is a machine which you use in to face off metals
and plastics!
The workpiece is held in place by a chuck that rotates. The tool
are held (often by hand on a support for woodturning) againt the
workpiece to form it in the desired way.

What Knurling sizes are available other than 40 TPI?

Knurls come in all different sizes and TPI. I've seen 7 TPI up
to 120 TPI all at different diameters and widths. Also flat dies
for thread rolling machines and circular dies for lathes. Knurls
can be custom made to any TPI depending on what you need. The TPI
of the knurl only allows proper tracking for certain incremented
diameters. Knurls also come in straight, male or female and diamond
patterns.

What inexpensive laptop computer would run SolidWorks software?

CAM programs require a lot of memory on the graphics end, as
well as a overall powerful system. Currently (Q3 2009), you're
limited to Quadro, FireGL and FirePro graphics cards for dependable
performance.

Answer
If your assemblies are large 250+(prts) then don't use laptop for
SW.... Currently I'm using an $6,000 (8 gig ram) system and it
still crashes on occasion... good luck.. PJ
PS.. i hate dell's service but products are ok...investigate
their portable products
Answer
It all depends on what are the MINIMUM Systems Requirement of
SolidWorks Software ...
Find out what processor and meomory your Laptop has ? on desk
top screen RIGHT-CLICK mouse button on "My Computer" Icon and go to
'Properties" in the list @ the bottom.
that shows that Processor and Memory that Laptop has ? then
compare the Systems Requirement of SolidWorks Software ... Its that
simple :)
==No, it's not that simple. The pull of resources in SW is
correlated with the geometry of the parts you're designing. I have
a supercomputer that I could crash with SW if I really wanted to;
try knurling a simple part, actually knurling the model, to see
what I mean. -Siress==

What is the value of a Model 1894 serial 38985 and when was it made?

That would be an 1895 gun, the 2nd year of production of the
model. Value depends on several issues, most importantly
ORIGINALITY and CONDITION. The exact barrel markings, length, and
configuration as well as any special order features make an
enormous difference. Even the pattern of knurling or checkering on
the hammer spur is important. Value can be from a few hundred
dollars to several THOUSAND dollars depending on all these factors.
Please forward us a detailed description and include as many clear
digital photos as possible. sales@countrygunsmith.net

Approximately how old is the Winchester Model 1904 22 rifle?

The Winchester Model 1904 was never serialized. The model was
introduced in 1904 and discontinued in 1931. Here are some ways to
get a little closer: If you have a crescent buttplate, 1904-c.1910,
hard rubber shotgun type buttplates after c.1910. Light checkering
on the cocking piece through c.1914, heavy knurling afterward.
Barrel markings on top of the barrel through c.1917, on the side
afterward. WP proof mark in an oval after c.1918. Diamond-shaped
cutout on steel pistol-grip piece, c.1927-1931.

What is the function of a tool post of a lathe machine?

The tool post allows the user to control a cutting tool (such as
a chisel) more accurately - to produce better results.
The tool post holds the lathe tools that will be required for
each cutting operation required in that part of teh production
process. Each post can hold up to four differing tolls - example.
Facing tool, knurling tool, long reach internal cutter and then a
parting tool. The tool post rides on the saddle on a horizontal
plane and the in a cross feed. Most tool feeds can be set to
automatic where cutting speed is set and the movement of the post
on the saddle automated

Importance of lathe machines?

Lathe machine is known as mother tool of all other machines
tools. It is widely using for making round/ spherical jobs. One of
the reasons of development of modern technology and modern
industries are due to the contribution of this simple machine.Lathe
machines is used for operations like:
Turning i.e workpiece will rotate on spindle against
longitudinally moving HSS or Carbide insert turning tool.
Facing i.e producing a flat surface by cross feeding a tool
against rotating workpiece.
Shaping or planning on a workpiece is also possible with the aid
of some attachments.
Drilling and boring are yet another important operations that
can be done on this machine.
knurling,Radius forming,Production of screws and various Milling
operations with suitable attachments are its additional scope of
operations.
