ES stands for Edison Screw. Just to confuse things there are several sizes. SES is Small Edison Screw (AKA ES14) The common size as used in the USA is about an inch in diameter, these are usually referred to as ES (AKA ES27) There are also some larger Edison Screw sizes used for industrial lamps. These are known as GES (Giant Edison Screw) and light bulbs of 150 watt and more often use GES. Smaller fittings tend to burn at powers over 150 watts.
