Lean and sixsigma are certificates sold by companys for profit. Normaly these companies will advise the buyer on how to run there business and will acredit them when they can show that they have paperwork to match their criteria. Lean critera would involve minimising the stock held "in house" as in "Just in Time" managment founded by the Ford motor company in the 1920's and minimising footfall in doing certain procedures as in time managment. Sixsigma would involve minimising product defect to within defined criteria as in Total Quality Managment(TQM) refer to Dr E W Deming circa 1950 and Philip Crosby (Zero defects) circa 1960. They are distinct. Lean was an attempt to understand the Toyota production system (but failed) and six sigma was developed by Motorola where they wanted zero defects, but reached a compromise using ppb. What a lot of people don't realize with Six Sigma is it assumes your process is going to drift all over the place. The obvious question is why not stop the drift? Both are flawed methodologies with limits as to their impact. On big limit is the religious zeal it seems to attract that eliminates our "reasoning" capability. For me Six Sigma has limited utility. Lean has some, but what needs to be appreciated was Toyota's need to reduce variation form an operations research point of view. Takt time really comes from the need to reduce the variation from customer demand. If this isn't understood, then the decision making required to make an outstanding business operation is missed.
