It was actually an 8 barreled gun. Each barrel was a small cannon, and the gun had 8-12 barrels. It looked a bit like a leaf rake, since the barrels spread out in a fan. Each barrel was a single shot muzzle loading gun- but you could shoot 8 times before reloading.

oneWell there is only one barrel on the gun, but it can hold 6 bullets in the standard revolver. There are variations of the gun that hold 5, 7 and 8 bullets, but those are very rare, particularly for the 7

Gatling guns have multiple barrels. Each barrel is being loaded, fired, being unloaded, cooling, and being reloaded in order. If it has 7 barrels, it is the equivalent to 7 guns. This permits the gun to fire very paidly.
