It depends exactly on where in the world the Samoans you are referring to live. For eg, if you mean Samoan lifestyle in Samoa, then it would be fair to say that the lifestyle is rather laid back. Living off the land (growing plantations/crops) is a tradition greatly reverred by Samoans. There's alot of Western influence in Samoa now so there are the latest technological advances coming into play (i.e, internet, mobile services). Samoans also pride themselves on being very religious so church-going (as mentioned by the first answerer) is very wide-spread.

You ask "why" is Samoa independent?... I'd say because like any other country, Samoans feel they should have the right to think and feel for themselves. Like other countries, Samoa shouldn't have to adhere to foreign laws. Samoa is independent because they (we) are intelligent enough to know when enough "outside-world" control is enough!

If you're talking about the olden days, yes, like any other country, Samoa had rulers also.
Samoa has the "Samoa Social Welfare Fesoasoani Trust" to aid former offenders. American Samoa also offers Food Stamps under US Federal Guidelines, like on the US Mainland.
This question is no longer valid, as Samoa has now changed its day to be like Australia and New Zealand. So when it is Wednesday in New Zealand, it is also Wednesday in Samoa.
American Samoa is a country in itself, and is a Trust Territory of the US. It does not have States like the United States.
