Line management, in safety and all other aspects of management, consists of the foreman or group leader, the person he reports to, the person she reports to and so on up to the plant manager and the head of the company. Line management is a means of grouping those management who have direct responsibility for the actual manufacture of the product or service the company provides. It is equivalent to the Chain of Command a private in the infantry in the Army.

Managers who are not part of line management are those who provide support services such as Human Relations, Medical, EHS guidance, research and development, maintenance functions, etc.
