Founded in 1846 as the Illinois Female Academy, the school became MacMurray College for Women in 1930, named after Illinois Sen. James E. MacMurray, a manufacturer of iron and steel products who was a major benefactor of the College and was a major contributor for the construction of many of the buildings that still exist (Annie Merner Chapel, Kathryn Hall, Jane Hall, MacMurray Hall, Rutledge Hall and the Henry Pfeiffer Library). The school dropped "for women" from its name in 1953.
