The cell is growing and, most importantly, checking to see that replication is possible during the next phase which is synthesis. Checks and repairs to the genetic material happen during G1.

During the G1 phase of the cell cycle, the cell grows and carries out its normal functions. This is followed by the S phase, during which DNA synthesis and replication occur. Finally, the G2 phase takes place, where the cell prepares for mitosis.
DNA replicates during the S phase of the cell cycle. This phase follows G1 phase and precedes G2 phase before the cell enters the next round of cell division. DNA replication ensures that each daughter cell receives a complete set of genetic information.
The cell cycle can be divided into two major periods: interphase, in which the cell grows and carries on its usual activities; and the mitotic phase, during which the nucleus divides and cytokinesis forms two cells.

Mitosis and cytokinesis occur during the M phase (mitotic phase) of the cell cycle. This phase is characterized by cell division, where the cell replicates its DNA and divides into two daughter cells.
DNA replication occurs during the S phase of the cell cycle. This phase follows the G1 phase and precedes the G2 phase. It is during the S phase that the cell duplicates its DNA to prepare for cell division.
Chromosomes are replicated during the S phase of the cell cycle.
