Glass. == I would guess that the first marbles that people played with were round rocks found near streams. Later, they were made out of ceramic materials (see the link). However, the cat's eye and other types are made of glass. There are several hundred different glass designs--with names! The Marble House in Devon, UK is outstanding for its hand blown marbles and extensive collection of marbles available. I was unable to find an online brochure showing pictures, though.
A hard crystalline metamorphic rock, marble consists mainly of calcite (CaCO3) or dolomite (CaMg (CO3)2), or a combination of both. While pure calcite marble is white, impurities such as hematite, limonite, serpentine, and diopside add red, yellow, green, and blue respectively.
Calcite I will say becuase it react with acid. It is a poor construction rock becuase if acid rain gets into it rock they weather it.
Marble is a metamorphic rock, and is essentially calcium carbonate (CaCO3).

Marble is a heterogeneous mixture. This means the rock is made out of two different mixtures, you can tell this because of the swirls that occur in it.
Geologist. Possibly a chemist.

Marble is a metamorphic rock.
Just like granite, marble is a mixture. However, unlike granite, marble is typically more than 90% calcium carbonate, so it might count as a pure substance. Marble is a type of limestone, so is a mixture.
