Marinol is a type of medicine called a cannabinoid. It attaches to special receptors in the brain stimulating appetite and reducing nausea. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved marinol to treat nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conventional treatments.
Dronabinol is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring compound known as
delta-9-THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) You might recognize THC as the active ingredient of marijuana.
MARINOL is not marijuana. MARINOL does not contain the additional chemicals and impurities associated with marijuana.
There has been some limited use of Marinol to control vomiting in patients undergoing Methotrexate treatments for severe Crohn's but its effects have yet to be well documented. Because appetite suppression is usually a Crohn's patients response to "you eat, you hurt" or "you eat and run to the toilet" treating the Crohn's successfully will in turn treat the lack of appetite.
Marinol is used to treat the side effects of the cancer treatment of chemotherapy, however it is used for managing the appetite loss in individuals with HIV.

I have heard that YES it can. Consuming very high doses of Marinol can cause death. http://cancer.emedtv.com/marinol/marinol-overdose.html Surely these people cant be ODing on THC. There must be something added or a filler in the marinol. I don't know how much THC is in Marinol but I don't believe that is what causes death. Anyone with info please post.

Marinol contains pure tetrahydrocannibinol (THC), which is the main active component of marijuana. However, marijuana plant material contains many active compounds, which mediate the effects of THC. Marinol does not contain those compounds. The effects are therefore reported to be different. In the strictest sense of "better for you," Marinol is better than smoked marijuana, as smoking any substance irritates the respiratory system and can increase your chances of infection. However, if Marinol is being compared to, say, eaten marijuana, it isn't "better for you" or "worse for you" as marijuana is a non-toxic substance. It would boil down to the individual user.
