I think it measures characteristics of soil to determine its suitability underneath a plant or substation. One way to measure resistance of the earth is with four conductors in a straight line -- the two outer ones inject a current, and the two center ones measure the voltage. From these two known quantities and Ohm's Law, R=V/I gives the resistance. Earth is not a great "earth," and electrical equipment and building designers strive for a resistance of one ohm. The earth seldom rarely complies with this.

What is the difference between earth resistance and insulation resistance?

insulation resistance can be measured by means of megger, with built in d.c generator. It is measured between the conductor and the earth. earth resistance can be measured by means of earth resistance tester. For good effective earthing, th earth resistance should be of order 0.5 ohm

What can be tested with a digital multimeter?

No. You must use a ground (earth) resistance tester, such as a earth-resistance megger. Apart from the practical requirements for making the test (too long to explain in this answer), a digital multimeter uses a DC supply, which acts to polarise the chemicals in the soil, giving false readings. ANSWER: YES you can but only if there is appreciable Resistance to measure. THERE ARE MANY GROUNDS EARTH IS ONE OF THEM

How do you identify the polarity of a diode when the tester is on resistance scale?

How Earth resistance meter works?

There are 3 terminals of an Earth Tester meter. Connect two terminals of meter to earth as far as cables can. Fix the two rods in to soil with the help of a small Hammer. Then connect two knobs of the meter with these rods.Connect the third terminal to the Earth Pit,to whom earth resistance is to be measured. The meter reading will indicate the resistance of the earth pit.The Best resistance of an earth pit must be under unity(<1). Answer BY: Naeem Ahmad Electrical Engineer.

What is the uses of tester?

A multi-tester can test:Voltage, Amperage, Resistance, Continuitysome can test temperature, phase rotation, frequency. It all depends on how much you spend, what kind of features they have.

Why the high resistance earth fault in the appliance increase the risk of electric shock when using appliance in earth situation?

If the earth connection has a high resistance it is not capable of acting as a true earth. For example, the high resistance might mean that the fuse or circuit-breaker will fail to operate when there is a fault.

Who invented the insulation resistance tester?

The insulation resister tester was invented by Ohm and was instantly the industry standard when dealing with testing the safety and effeciency of electrical products according to the Electrical Construction & Maintenance web site ecmweb.

What is the purpose of a Cable tester?

A cable tester is used to test the electrical connections in a cable or other wired device. There are two ways to test for a connection: continuity test and resistance test. A cable tester can also test for a short by determining voltage.
