Black salt is Kala Namak, a type of natural volcanic halite (the mineral form of Sodium Chloride [NaCl]).
It is a pungent, purplish to pinkish-gray rock salt used in India and in Indian spices for it's sulfurous hard-boiled egg aroma. This is due to the contamination with sodium bisulfide in this rocky, vulcanic mineral.
Also some sulfates and borates may be present.
Black salt is mined.
