The name Christopher comes from two Greek words: χριστός (Kristos/Christ) and φέρειν (pherein/to carry).
This name was given to a Canaanite named Reprobus. Legend states that he was an 18-foot tall man in the service of the Canaanite king. He decided to depart from this king, though, to find the most powerful king in the world to serve.
He found the king who claimed to be the most powerful. One day, upon the mention of the Devil, the king crossed himself. Reprobus, unfamiliar with the customs of Christianity, inquired about this action. It was explained that this was to ward off the effects of the devil. Reprobus intepreted this in such a way that if even the greatest king was afraid of the Devil, then the Devil must certainly be the greatest king.
He departed then and continued on his search, this time looking for the Devil. He found a man claiming to be Satan, and immediately took up his service; he soon learned that there was one who even the Devil feared, and that was Christ. Again, Reprobus decided that if there was someone who even the Devil feared, then He must truly be the most powerful king.
Reprobus decided to learn of Christianty, and so came across a hermit. Reprobus asked this hermit to teach him of Christianity, and how to become a Christian. The hermit advised that Reprobus should pray and fast, but Reprobus was unwilling to do so. The hermit suggested that in lieu of that, Reprobus should go and help people cross a wide river, in which many people had been drowning while attempting to cross. He agreed, and helped a great number of people to successfully traverse the river.
One day, a child came to him and asked Reprobus to carry him across the river. He agreed without hesitation; however, during the crossing, a storm arose, and the river swelled, all while the child became as heavy as lead. Barely making it to the opposite bank, Christopher said to the child, "You have put me in the greatest danger. I do not think the whole world could have been as heavy on my shoulders as you were!" The child responded, "You had on your shoulders not only the whole world but Him who made it. I am Christ your king, whom you are serving by this work." Hence, Reprobus was renamed Χριστόφορος, or Kristoforos - the Christ Carrier.
