Genesis 3..
14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
First of all, it is to be understood in its plain meaning, that the narrative took place as stated (1 Samuel ch.17).
In addition, it means that God gives victory to whom He wants, no matter how unlikely it may seem (1 Samuel 17:45-47, Psalm 33:16-19).
On the simple level, it was a battle to the death, which would determine the outcome of the wider battle between the Israelites and the Philistines (1 Samuel 17:8-9). On a deeper level, it was a battle between the belief of the Israelites (in God), and the belief of the Philistines (in their idols), as David stated:
"You (Goliath) come against me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin; but I come against you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have ridiculed. Today the Lord will deliver you into my hand; and I will smite you, and cut off your head....that all the Earth may know that there is a God in Israel" (1 Samuel ch.17).
