The flow of current can be explain with an analogy to the flow of water through a pipeline when we turn the water- tap, water from water-tank flows through the pipe and flows out to ground.
Like this when we applied a potential difference current flows through our instruments and ultimately to ground. In the case of a cell its negative terminal act as ground, but in the case of AC power supply system earth act as ground.
We get power from Power station, but not directly, there are several Transformers in between power station and the destination. These transformers are ground to earth so that the flow of electricity is complete. In our home there are several ground points, this act as a bypass for excess current when it entered to our domestic power supply system (Keep it in mind that in this case also the current ultimate goes to earth)
