In 535 AD a haze covered much of the northern hemisphere to the point where the sun was blotted out for all but about 4 hrs of the day. This caused massive droughts and famine. In some cases plague resulted from malnutrition. The cause is unknown, some speculate volcanic eruption others suppose an impact by an asteroid or comet.
