The term for being financially able to pay is "solvent." A solvent individual or entity has sufficient assets or income to meet their financial obligations. This contrasts with being insolvent, where one cannot meet their debts as they come due.
The term success here meant financially or position (eg. Minister) successful. The term value here meant good ethics and have high moral values. The statement is saying that it is better to be someone filled with good ethics and high moral values than be someone who is successful financially or with power who is not ethical and holds no moral values.
The question is a little ambiguous. During the crusades many were disadvantaged due to the era. However if you are asking what side, christians or muslims, were disadvantaged I would say that christians were largely disadvantaged. Both sides committed atrocities but many people only demonize christians. That and only the first crusade was successful.
