Light is normally scene in white light form where all colours are "joined" in a single beam however when it enters a prism, due to the differences in how much each color refracts due to there varying speed within the solid (red fastest, violet slowest), the light is dispersed into many beams of different colours
making a rainbow effect, (it also happens in raindrops which act as prisms, which is how we get rainbows).
