luminous flames are those which throw or Emmit bright light of great intensity......but non luminous flames are those which just glow and do not emmit light of such great intensity................
it should not be misunderstood with candle ......and coal........as one emits flame and the other does knot's as there is no flame......there is no point of luminous or non luminous

From an organic chemistry view, a luminous flame, is a yellow and bright flame, that comes from organic compounds with loss of hydrogen, resulting in incomplete combustion, very different from a non-luminous flame, that is observed with propane, butane, methanol or ethanol flames, that can have a light blue color, but not a bright yellow flame. This non-luminous can be observed in a complete combustion (so it forms only water and carbon dioxide).
This luminous combustion can be seen when a car or a gas station explodes or in petrochemical fires...

When the air hole is closed, the flame is a luminous flame. This flame is not ideal for heating for the following reasons: it is not as hot as the non-luminous flame it is very unstable it produces a lot of soot thus, only non-luminous flames (the blue one) is ideal for heating. :)
