It would be closer to correct to say that a single action was a "massive success" (a solid or substantial triumph) rather than apply it to long-term success. The use of "massive" (huge) to describe the word success is an example of a modern English trend of using synonyms for "large" instead of synonyms for "great." This results from a desire to express superlatives using concepts that everyone will recognize.

Success (the opposite of failure) cannot properly be described as "large," although it could be impressive, noteworthy, outstanding, remarkable, or unparalleled.
