  • Mesons are particles composed of a quark and its antiquark.
  • Nucleons are particles composed of 3 quarks.

In a nucleus the nucleons are protons and neutrons.

Part of the Standard Model states that the residual strong force that holds the nucleus together against the repulsive electrostatic force of the neutrons is carried in the exchange of mesons (bosons - whole integer spin) between the nucleons (fermions - half integer spin). These mesons are normally not directly detectable because they are effectively a bound virtual particle/antiparticle pair, but their effect is quite observable.

Free mesons have been observed in cosmic rays and accelerators.
