Microfracture surgery is a procedure performed by orthopaedic surgeons to try to fill in an area where the articular cartilage has broken down. The surgeon uses an awl to make small holes in the bone to allow blood to collect in the defect. Theoretically an inflammatory reaction then occurs and leads to the creation on fibrocartilage in the defect.
