Salt, sugar, and water are all mixtures. A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are physically intermingled but retain their individual properties. In the case of salt sugar and water, each component can be separated by physical means, such as filtration or evaporation.
Examples of solid-liquid mixtures include sugar dissolved in water, salt dissolved in water, and coffee grounds suspended in water.
Homogeneous mixtures commonly used in everyday life include air (a mixture of gases like nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide) and sugar dissolved in water to make a solution. Both of these mixtures have uniform composition throughout.
The mixtures in order of increasing particle size are: sugar water, milk, muddy water, and sand in water. Sugar water has the smallest particles (sugar dissolves), followed by milk (small protein and fat particles), then muddy water (small soil particles), and sand in water has the largest particles (sand does not dissolve).
