Being mammals, platypuses reproduce via sexual reproduction.

Platypuses are also monotremes, meaning they reproduce by laying eggs, which hatch into young platypuses that initially feed off mothers' milk. Monotremes are egg-laying mammals and include just the platypus and the echidna. Platypuses lay eggs in a chamber at the end of a burrow dug into a riverbank or next to a creek.

Their young, once hatched, drink milk from grooves on the mother's abdomen where it seeps from glands, rather than attaching to teats.

Reproduction is by internal fertilization. The fertilized eggs develop either into eggs, which hatch some time after being laid, or into embryos which develop inside the females body and are born live.
