Incumbent President George W. Bush won reelection in the 2004 presidential election defeating John Kerry. In the 2004 presidential election George W. Bush received 286 electoral votes and John Kerry received 251 electoral votes. The popular vote totals were Bush 60,693,281 and Kerry 57,355,978.

I think people perceived a lack of character and moral values in John Kerry. He went to Vietnam in hopes of coming back a war-hero. He dumped his first wife to marry a rich widow. He changed his last name to seem to be Irish. He had an ambition legislative plan which he dropped as soon as he lost the presidency, even though he was still a senator.
